Roberto’s Extensive Government Experience

Roberto Hernandez has extensive government experience that goes all the way back to the mid-1980’s, when he interned for then-Assemblymember Art Agnos.

SAN FRANCISCO

Working With City Hall

Through his years of experience leading nonprofits, Roberto has become adept at navigating City Hall – working on legislation, getting permits and coordinating closely with the City to ensure events like Carnaval run smoothly.

DA Latino Advisory Committee/SFPD Latino Advisory Committee

Currently, Roberto serves City government in multiple capacities. He sits on the District Attorney’s Latino Advisory Committee, helping foster positive relations between the DA’s office and the community. He also serves on the Police Chief’s Latino Advisory Committee to make sure there is an ongoing dialogue between SFPD and the Latinx community.

San Francisco Boards and Committees

Over the years, Roberto has served on the SF Film Commission, the Board of SF Travel, and chaired the Mission’s Model Cities Committee. He has worked with SF Unified School District as an appointee to the Student Attendance Review Board (SARB), which was charged with reviewing the cases of all students who had been suspended or expelled from school to help get them back on track.

STATEWIDE

Passing AB90 – Fighting Racial Injustice in Schools

Roberto worked with a coalition throughout California to help prove that young people of color were more likely to be sent through the “school to prison” pipeline. Roberto worked with a lawyer to provide documentation of this injustice, and through the passage of AB90, he was able to receive funding to open a rehabilitation home for young boys.

Passing AB60 – Drivers Licenses for Immigrants

Roberto was part of the statewide coalition that helped pass AB60 into law to allow undocumented immigrants to get Driver Licenses and IDs. Roberto worked AB60 in the State Assembly and the State Senate, and ultimately, it was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom.

Passing AB436 – Ending Cruising Bans for Lowriders

As the 40-year head of the San Francisco Lowrider Council, Roberto was an instrumental member of the California Lowrider Alliance, which helped pass AB436. The bill overturned      the no-cruising policies that existed in cities all across California, allowing a core component of Latinx culture to thrive throughout the state once again.
