Roberto’s 9-point safety plan for District 9
1
COMMUNITY AMBASSADORS:
Invest in the hiring and training of district residents who will be a visible presence on the streets, promoting safety and connecting people with services.
2
PARENT HALL & RESOURCE MONITORS:
Invest in the hiring and training of parents to be responsible for keeping our students safe in schools, and support teachers with resources in classrooms.
3
SENIOR ESCORT PROGRAM:
Invest in the hiring and training of neighborhood residents who have a passion to serve our district’s seniors, transporting them to doctors’ appointments, to run errands, engage in senior activities and outings, and more.
4
COMMUNITY BOARDS:
Invest in a dedicated District 9 Community Board to address conflict resolutions and engage in restorative justice. The Board will provide mediation, lead coaching sessions, and facilitate healing circles in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog, and English.
5
BLOCK CLUB PROGRAM:
Invest in organizing residents block by block to get to know each other, identify and act on concerns, plant trees, create green spaces, and use their hyperlocal voice in neighborhood-wide planning initiatives.
6
YOUTH PROGRAM:
Invest in employment training, and create after-school and summer job opportunities for our district’s youth. Form entrepreneurship incubator hubs, and host weekend late night basketball, soccer, flag football, and video game tournaments to keep our youth positively engaged with one another and the community.
7
POLICE RECRUITMENT:
SFPD’s current 900 vacant positions will take 10 years to fill. Create a pathway for our students in all schools, starting with eighth graders, to pursue a future in public safety. Mentor students throughout high school, and upon graduation, enroll them in City College and ensure they take the necessary courses ready to apply and succeed in a public safety career such as police officer, sheriff, firefighter, nurse and EMT. Collaborate and coordinate with SFPD officers to increase community engagement efforts, such as family fun activities, in order to nurture positive relationships and develop trust in law enforcement.
8
CLEAN STREETS:
Invest in steam cleaners and daily sweep crews, and implement twice-a-year bulky item recycling collections in coordination with Recology. Support annual garage sales throughout the district.
9
STREET VENDORS:
Remove all illegal stolen vending by pursuing real consequences for bad actors, and create a Master Plan to encourage and incentivize legal vending on the BART plazas.
